Ask the Nurse
I sat down with nurse, Chelsea Boeres and asked her a few questions about smoothies.
Me: Do you think it is a good idea to use smoothies as meal replacements?
Chelsea: I do. I think it is a great idea as along as you make sure you get all the needed nutrients you need in a day. Which should not be too difficult considering most people are most likely to put fruits and vegetables into their smoothies. Each being a great source of healthy carbohydrates and fiber. Protein can be a lot bit more difficult, but you can make sure you get this needed protein by adding in nuts, seeds, or even supplements.
Me: What do you think of added supplements, such as the enhancers used by Smoothie King?
Chelsea: I think that it is okay. However, you must be careful not to use those supplements as your only source of protein, fiber, or whatever it might be for the day. For example, if you get a smoothie for lunch and add a protein supplement in it that is okay, but be sure to eat another real source of protein for dinner, like lean meat.
Me: Who would you recommend to use a smoothie as a meal replacement?
Chelsea: I would recommend a smoothie as meal replacement to anyone who is trying to lose weight or anyone who is in a hurry. They can fill you up, give you the nutrients you need, and are great in a time crunch. It is so much better to drink a healthy smoothie than go to a fast food place and order a burger and fries.
